Wine grapes were first planted in the state of Florida in the sixteenth century. Although wine making has deep roots there, due to their tropical climate, until the nineteenth century, there was no mass production of Tampa wines. In the thirties, a new hybrid was developed, suited for this type of climate, and it was the real beginning of more serious wine production.

The specialties of Tampa bay Area are fruit or citrus vines, although some wineries make their products using grapes only. One of these companies focused on original grape beverages only is The strong Tower winery. All their products are made from four types of grapes, but even they have a special, blueberry wine in their offer. Different combinations of citrus and grape vines can be found in most other wineries.

Other wineries such as Florida Orange Groves and Winery, located in Pinellas County, offers pure citrus based vines. If you are more interested in traditional wineries, you can try some of their tasty and interesting products in Rosa Fiorelly winery, in Bradenton. They offer free wine tasting every day, and the same thing is with The Florida Estates winery in Paco County.

You have to be aware of the fact that most wineries in this state produce their beverages using the finest grapes from California and Canada. This includes their Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, White Zinfandel and Merlot. Some wineries combine these grapes with their own, and some produce their beverages from Californian grapes only.

In any case, citrus vines are really interesting. Blueberry wine, for example, has a tart scent, full body and warm dulcet fruit flavors. Made from sun-ripened blueberries, with no grapes added, it has very nice texture and delicate sweetness. Sweet, dry and semi-dry variations are mostly available. Strawberry wine is, on the other hand, mostly combined with Riesling. Beautiful, pale gold colored vine is best served chilled.

Red wines combinations of wild berries and well known Pinot Noir are seductive and aromatic. They pair great with spiced foods, Asian dishes and all intensive tastes. The one made by Keel and Curley winery includes raspberries and blueberries, among other berries, and is widely appreciated.

Bitter-sweet tasted, orange-red Tangerine wine is delicate and refreshing at the same time. Tangerine is mostly combined with Zinfandel. Lemon and lime are often used in production of these beverages. For example, Key West Key Lime was the best fruit wine made in Florida in 2009, and it combines zingy flavors of key lime with delicate aroma of Sauvignon Blanc.

Full body and intensive aroma of pure blackberry vine is too much for some people, but this vine has extraordinary qualities that shouldn't be ignored. It is full of valuable anti oxidants, iron and some other vitamins and minerals, great for re-convalescents. It is considered to be extremely healthy, and, if you prefer stronger aromas, you won't be sorry if you taste it.

Fruit made, grape only or combined, all Tampa wines are best served chilled. Some go great with meat dishes, some are better with light vegetable meals, but you will enjoy sipping any of them in some warm summer evening. They are mostly light and very refreshing, with exciting fruity aromas and interesting tastes.
